Shiatsu during and after pregnancy with Maria

7/6/2015

Pregnancy Shiatsu with Maria Shlumukova at Meadowlark Yoga - Edinburgh Shiatsu
Pregnant or recently had a baby? Having a baby can be a demanding time, both physically and emotionally. There's pressure on your internal organs, circulation, spine, joints, thoughts, emotions and finances!  With Shiatsu treatment I aim to give you more space, be it head space of pure relaxation or less pressure on the swollen ankles, eased out spine or as much of a full breath as the growing bump will permit. Shiatsu massage can be used to give you a boost, help you to feel relaxed, induce deep sleep, reduce the aches and improve your ability to cope with (and enjoy!) daily challenges of pregnancy and parenthood. I even give you a handy £10 discount! Book by phoning Meadowlark Yoga on 0131 228 7581

I've been a Shiatsu therapist for about 7 years before experiencing firsthand the benefits of having this treatment during pregnancy. In the early days of pregnancy I felt as if my body has been taken over by an alien, making me ache in various unpredictable places, be simultaneously ravenous and nauseous and at times emotionally fragile. Having Shiatsu helped me feel like myself again rather than a human-shaped shell used by a body-snatching embryo. The aches melted away and I was able to ride the inevitable emotional waves with greater ease.

Regular Shiatsu and Yoga practice have been fundamental in keeping me sane, positive, energetic and reasonably healthy. I was able to carry on working right up to my due date, manage the fluid retention in my ankles and the annoying aches.

I had my first Shiatsu after my daughter was born within a couple of weeks and loved the feeling of being looked after and pampered, tensions melting away. I soon realised that it wasn't just new mums that were in need of bodywork of this kind - underslept dads, with creaky backs and stressed out heads need the attention and "me time" too.

Since resuming my practice I was keen to use my skills to benefit both expectant mothers and those with young children. The massage involves stretches and working into the joints and spine, acupressure, breath work. It's varied to give you what you need on the day. You'll be relaxing on a soft floor-level futon and I use lots of cushions to get you comfortable. I often deploy the Body Cushion, which is a really fantastic support allowing you be on your front, accommodating the bump. Pure luxury! it also means that whether you're pregnant or just have tension in any part of your back you remain comfortably supported in a neutral position throughout the session.

I am offering 1 hour Shiatsu sessions at £10 discount - £35 instead of the usual £45 for anyone who is pregnant or has a child under 12months (mums and dads!). If you're pregnant please wait until you are within the second trimester before having the treatment.

I work from Meadowlark in Marchmont area. It's a lovely treatment room with the entrance through the cafe at 39 Argyle Place - perfect if you would like to chill out after your treatment. Book by phoning the reception on 0131 228 7581 to make sure you get your discount. If you have any specific questions or comments about pregnancy Shiatsu please contact me on 07968874345

What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu translates as ‘finger pressure’ and is based on traditional Japanese massage.  Combining acupressure, massage, flowing movement and joint rotations helps to disperse tension, reduce pain, promote relaxation and healthy functioning of the body systems (circulation, breathing, digestion etc.). Shiatsu  therapists are guided by their experience & knowledge of physiology and traditional Chinese medicine and apply pressure using fingers, thumbs, palms and elbows and combine it with other techniques.
