Let me wave a magic wand to ease you into "pre-Christmas", when our persuit of celebration and warmth of connecting with friends and family is often in conflict with the "hibernation instinct" and duvet. Behold the invitation to a day spa event on 4 December at Santosa Yoga Studio! No, you don't need to remortgage and yes, it involves Shiatsu.

Seasonal Sanctuary Spa Day at Santosa - Book Now!

Jenny White, Edinburgh Shiatsu practitioner at Santosa Yoga and Meditation Studio
The mellow combination of yoga, meditation, therapy and food aims to:
  • Give your mind and body much needed rest and energy boost
  • Make you feel supported, warmed and nourished, even by way of CAKE!
  • Ground you in what's important to you in what can be a bit of a whirlwind time of year.

From personal experience Santosa (Albert Street, just off Leith Walk) is a bit of a sanctuary as it is - warm and welcoming space, treasure trove of a shop, delicious goodies in the cafe, great selection of yoga and therapies including our very own fabulous Shiatsu wiz Jenny White, gorgeous yoga studio and treatment rooms, and friendly staff running the show.

This is from Santosa themselves, with all the details about the Spa Day:

"Welcome you to our first Seasonal Sanctuary Spa Day on Sunday 4th December from 9.30 - 5.00 pm. Prepare to be energised, relaxed and pampered – the perfect gift to yourself or a loved one in the lead up to Christmas.

Your day begins at 9:30 am with a glass of rejuvenating, immune booting juice and Santosa's signature raw energy balls to get the day off to a healthy start.

The first yoga class begins at 10.00 am where Heather introduces simple yoga techniques to gently awaken the body and mind. Through breathing techniques (pranayama), sound (mantra) and movement the intention is to help you feel calm and balanced with increased clarity of mind. The class starts with setting this intention for the day, followed by light Pranayama and ends with a gentle flow movement practice before shivasana (deep relaxation).

Time for a healthy vegetarian or vegan energy-packed lunch in the cafe and some yogic retail therapy where you can be assured that all the products are both ethically sourced and fairly traded. An exclusive 10% discount is included on Santosa’s Made in Nepal products and Yoghanda Oils and you can stock up on your festive shopping list with Gecko Galleries' gorgeous jewellery and artisan gifts from Rajasthan and Fairyland Aromatics therapeutic grade essential oil handmade products.

You have the choice of indulging in one of three holistic therapy treatments each lasting for 30 minutes. Choose from:

Reflexology with Fiona
Shiatsu with Jenny
Face lift massage including shoulders and neck with Majia
Back massage (including back, shoulders and neck) with Maija
Reiki with Maija

You can book an additional session, or extend the 30 mins to a full hour for the discounted rate of £15 (subject to availability).

After relaxing and enjoying everything our beautiful space has to offer, it is time for the second yoga class in the studio where Sharon leads you through a gentle relaxing Yin practice by candlelight. The class finishes with a Guided Meditation with light massage with the award winning range of Yoghanda Oils to calm and detoxify.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, a selection of Yogi Teas and Cake are waiting in the café before you step back, renewed and rejuvenated, into the real world!

All of this for the special introductory price of £70 per person or £120 for you and a friend! Please contact the studio for more information or book online."

Jenny White in Post-referendum Shiatsu conversation - by Maria Shlumukova

Jenny has just moved her practice to a brand new Nepalese-inspired treatment space/Cafe/ Yoga Studio/ shop - Santosa in Albert Street, just off Leith Walk. I met her there to have a nosy and find out more on her take on Shiatsu.

Santosa is a beautiful place- spacious, welcoming and full of tempting goodies.  We occupy a couple of comfy sofas and prepare to talk about bodywork, but our conversation inevitably turns to the EU Referendum fallout.

It seemed important not to skim over this, so here are some thoughts on the supportive things you can do for yourself and those around you, including some calming acupressure points and a meditation to try.

Guest blog: The subtle art of noticing by Ashley Watson

Ashley Watson mindfulness and therapies
"Strong emotions have been the order of the day recently. As the UK struggles to wake up to the possibility of life outside of the EU, we are all dealing with our own emotions – shock, anger, disbelief, fear, confusion. Many people may be feeling joy, if the result was in line with their wishes. In these situations we can get caught up in what is called ‘emotional contagion’. This is where we literally ‘catch’ other people’s emotions as though we were catching a virus. We get caught up in collective fear or anger. It works the same way with happiness, but sadly that seems to be in short supply just now.. " - get some practical support from an Edinburgh-based mindfulness expert Ashley Watson

Insomnia (Physician, heal thyself!)

I have recently had a few prolonged bouts of insomnia of the 2-hours-sleep-a-night-if-you’re-lucky variety. Sometimes this means strict measures are required. Here are a few which I engage in this type of situation!

  • no caffeine after 2pm … progressing to no caffeine at all
  • minimal alcohol intake … progressing to no alc.-at-all
  • all devices off 1 hour before bedtime … progressing to no devices, work or thinking whatsoever (including holiday planning, dissecting the day, or analysing my mental state) after 6pm.

I also try ...

What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu translates as ‘finger pressure’ and is based on traditional Japanese massage.  Combining acupressure, massage, flowing movement and joint rotations helps to disperse tension, reduce pain, promote relaxation and healthy functioning of the body systems (circulation, breathing, digestion etc.). Shiatsu  therapists are guided by their experience & knowledge of physiology and traditional Chinese medicine and apply pressure using fingers, thumbs, palms and elbows and combine it with other techniques.
